Bicycle safety in California

Share Post:

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) encourages everyone on the road to respect each other and practice safe driving. In recent years, the number of fatal traffic accidents has increased in many parts of the state. Bicyclist and pedestrian deaths, in particular, continue to rise.

Each year, more than 100 bicyclists are killed in traffic accidents. Another estimated 10,000 suffer serious injuries. While none of us can control or predict others’ actions, we can take measures ourselves to be as safe as possible.

Bicycle Safety in California

So, what can bicyclists do to be as safe as possible on the road? Here are some bicycle safety tips from the DMV:

  • Make sure your bicycle is the appropriate size. If the bike is too big or too small, it can impact your ability to control it.
  • Make sure your bicycle is working properly. Routinely check your brakes, tires, and steering.
  • Always wear a helmet. The law requires bicyclists under 18 to wear a helmet on public roads, but any bicyclist of any age should wear one. Helmets do save lives.
  • Make yourself as visible as possible. Have your bicycle outfitted with reflectors. Wear bright colors or reflective gear on your body as well.
  • Be aware of traffic laws that apply to you. Always obey them.
  • Use hand signals whenever you are making a turn or changing lanes.
  • Ride in a safe position. Bicyclists should ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Bicyclists must obey some of the same traffic laws and rules as motorists. These include:
    • Stop at all stop signs and traffic signals
    • Do not cross an intersection at a yellow or red light
    • Follow basic right-of-way rules
    • Use a signal before turning or changing lanes
    • Follow directions being given by a traffic cop

By considering these safety tips, you can ensure that you are doing your part to be safe on the road.
